Exploring the Role of Dopamine in Our Emotional and Mental Well-Being


One of the substances that most influence our emotional and mental state is dopamine. Yet, many of us don't know enough about it. This is a shame because a deeper understanding of dopamine's role and function in the brain can help us live better lives, particularly by maintaining our motivation and pleasure over time.


Dopamine functions in our body both as a hormone and as a neurotransmitter. These technical terms are less important. What is crucial to understand is that dopamine acts like the marker with which the brain highlights experiences, signaling to us: "I want to do that again." Dopamine is involved in creating a sense of motivation, awakening curiosity,


learning, the desire to explore, and many other functions. These aspects relate to the evolutionary value of maintaining a normal dopamine level, which enhances our chances of reproduction and resource acquisition.

To better understand, imagine we are ancient people in a cave. Without dopamine, once we ran out of food, we wouldn't leave the cave. The outside world poses threats like snakes, scorpions, and fires; we could get injured or lost. Without dopamine, when food runs out, life would essentially end. Dopamine is the substance that motivates us to plan and successfully execute an exit from the cave. It helps us remember where we saw a deer, determine the safest time to venture out, and get curious about what lies beyond the mountain. Thanks to dopamine, we get excited about our plans and take action.


Dopamine's role doesn't end there. Let's say our plan goes well, and we find a strawberry bush and hunt a deer. At this point, a cascade of dopamine floods our brains, providing immense pleasure, like a waterfall of coins from a slot machine. However, this high doesn't last long. From an evolutionary perspective, this makes sense. If dopamine kept us high for too long, we wouldn't have the motivation to secure our future or reproduce. Hence, dopamine levels fall, and they fall below the base level we had before our quest.


Understanding Dopamine's Rise and Fall

This fall is not just a survival advantage but a biological function. Dopamine is produced and stored at the ends of neurons in synaptic vesicles and released into synapses according to nerve impulses. The process of creating dopamine involves several steps, and once the brain releases its dopamine stores, it takes time for the body to produce more and refill these sacs. We experience this biological mechanism whenever we feel a low after a high. The more significant the dopamine release, the deeper the subsequent fall.


When we experience a downturn, we naturally try to get more dopamine. However, our approach is often misguided, leading to the opposite of the desired result. We mistakenly think that incorporating more dopamine-releasing actions will increase our pleasure. It's like adding more sugar to coffee, assuming it will always taste sweeter.


But the truth is more complex. Our brain's pleasure experience is not just a direct product of the absolute amount of dopamine released but also a result of the relative change in dopamine levels. Imagine a pleasure scale from 1 to 10. An action that gives us pleasure at level 8 won't always provide that level of pleasure. If it follows an action that gave us pleasure at level 6, it feels pleasurable. But if it follows an experience at level 10, it won't be enjoyable because the brain experiences a decrease in dopamine. Similarly, if it follows an action at level 8, it won't be exciting because there is no change in dopamine levels.


This understanding is critical, especially concerning addiction. In addiction, initial uses lead to a significant increase in pleasure, but subsequent uses result in less pleasure. Each time the brain experiences a drop below the base level, it requires more dopamine to return to the base level.


Dopamine Sandwiches: The Pitfalls of Overlapping Pleasures

We encounter this problem without being addicted to hard drugs. We deprive ourselves of basic enjoyment by creating "dopamine sandwiches"—combinations of actions that each result in dopamine release. For example, eating snacks while watching TV or browsing on the phone while eating a meal creates a dopamine sandwich. After experiencing the combined pleasure, returning to one of these actions alone feels less enjoyable.


What can we do? Unwrap the sandwich. It's okay to indulge occasionally, but our lives don't need to resemble a hip-hop music video. If we want to enjoy life more consistently, we should identify where we create overlaps between dopamine-releasing actions and start minimizing them.
